The American Medical Association wants more red tape in your life:
As reported in the Jan. 3/10 issue of American Medical News, the AMA (American Medical Association) at their Interim Meeting called for tighter FDA regulations to govern dietary and herbal supplements. Ultimately, the AMA , wants the FDA to require all dietary supplements to undergo the same FDA approval process as prescription drugs. If the AMA gets its way, it will lead to an era of more government regulation, higher prices, and fewer choices in the dietary supplement market. In short, it will be a catastrophe for you the consumer. Tragically, the AMA's main motivation for demanding more stringent FDA regulation of dietary supplements is money. The AMA and its allies in the drug industry covet the $6 billion in sales generated annually by dietary supplements and nutritionals, which support a dietary approach to health care instead of medical treatment after illness occurs.
By insisting on stricter FDA regulations for dietary supplements, the AMA places itself in a powerful position-it can eliminate competition from nutritional companies for health care dollars, monopolize the health care industry, and usurp the $6 billion spent on dietary supplements each year.
Here's how it will work:
Bankruptcy will become a reality for most dietary supplement companies forced to leap through the FDA's regulatory hoops. According to the FDA's own Web site (CLICK: www.FDA.gov/fdac/special/newdrug/begin.html), companies trying to obtain FDA approval for their products spend an average of nearly 9 years and $359 million dollars mired in a bureaucratic labyrinth.
Many companies may spend well beyond these averages to get their products approved, yet there is no guarantee of FDA approval. By the FDA's own admission, the research and approval process for drugs is "complicated, time-consuming, and costly."
Forced to obtain FDA approval, companies will pass these exorbitant costs on to you. In that bleak future, what is now a $10 bottle of dietary supplements could jump to $80 or higher. Faced with soaring prices, many consumers will be unable to afford dietary supplements and herbal remedies.
All but a few companies will lose their market share, profits, and eventually their existence. That outcome would apparently suit the AMA and others in the medical community who are battling for a virtual monopoly of the money generated by the entire health care industry. "Your good health is bad for the medical community's pocketbooks,"
Neways President Tom Mower says. "Indeed, physicians, pharmacists, and others in the health care industry depend upon the sick for their income. By crippling the dietary supplement industry with FDA regulations, the medical community strikes a blow against alternative health care and defends their livelihood."
Neways urges you to write your congressional representative to express your opposition of the AMA's proposal. FDA regulation of herbal supplements could prove devastating to affordable nutritional supplementation and empower the government-not you-to take charge of your health. Send the AMA this message: stick to the Hippocratic Oath- not the hypocritic oath.
Your good health depends on it.
(Note: this article does not intend to imply that all members of the AMA (doctors, pharmacist, and others health care professionals) are motivated by money and self-interest, nor does it imply that the FDA is motivated by such concerns. Many, if not most, in the health care industry are motivated by genuine altruism and actively seek to learn more about the complementary products, supplements and treatments that promote the health of their patients.)
What a scary thought, having the government be in charge of our health!
