Care All you ever hear about these days is SPF. It seems as
though everyone claims to have it in their products. What is SPF? Why is it
important? And how much of it do you need to protect your skin from the sun?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is defined as
the amount of sun exposure needed to cause slight erythema (redness) of the
skin which has been protected with an application of 2mg/cm2 of sunscreen,
divided by the amount of energy required to produce the same erythema on
unprotected skin. Its complicated, but what you need to know is that the
higher the SPF number, the more sunscreen protection.
What is the difference between waterproof and
water-resistant sunscreens? For a sunscreen to call itself waterproof, it must
retain 100 % of its sun protection after 20 minutes of water immersion.
Water-resistant means the sunscreen's SPF value was determined after 40
minutes of water immersion, but is not a measure of what percentage of its
original SPF value it has retained after being in water.
Why should everyone use a sunscreen? The incidence of sun
exposure-related skin cancers is growing at an alarming rate. For example,
throughout the past decade the most deadly of all skin cancers - melanoma -
has skyrocketed from one in 1,500 to one in 75. According to the American
Cancer Society, 44,200 people will be diagnosed with malignant melanoma this
year (2000), and 9,200 will die from it - almost 2,000 more than last year.
Reducing sun exposure time and the use of a good sunscreen could likely have
prevented many of these statistics.
The American Academy of Dermatology has recommended that
consumers use sunscreens with a sun protection factor of at least a 15, and to
use it year-round. Lotions with strong sun protection factors for younger
developing children have been indicated by pediatricians, since the protective
qualities of their melanocytes and immunological cells are still seeking
maturity at birth. Thus, maturation time for these protective cells should be
